The 2004 Animal Rescue Conference will be held at Weber's Inn, Ann Arbor Michigan on Sunday, October 24. Attendees will be able to take part in a number of exciting sessions on rescue operations and animal evaluations. Speakers include:

Doug Fakkema
Consultant to Animal Care and Control, from Charleston, SC speaking on
Managing Compassion Fatigue

This is one of our most requested topics. Doug will explore identifying the warning signs of compassion fatigue and how to avoid this burnout.

Doug will also offer a workshop for those who want to explore Doug's ideas on identifying and dealing with compassion fatigue in more detail. This workshop will provide an understanding of the symptoms and causes of compassion fatigue from an animal care perspective. This experiential workshop will feature several exercises and activities designed to challenge and invigorate participants.

Kathy Sdao
Lecturer, Writer, Bright Spot Dog Training, from Tacoma WA speaking on
Intake Triage: Can this Dog be Saved?

Are there ways to maximize these resources to improve your ability to make judgments? Kathy will draw on her experiences as a consultant to clients with serious dog behavior problems to propose some answers.

Kathy will also offer a workshop on Demystifying Clicker Training. Misconceptions about the method abound. Variations in technique and applications lead to widely varying results. Learn how to get the most from this science-based, force-free, powerful training system. This fast-paced brief session will dispel some common myths, provide practical usage tips, and tell you how you can continue your clicker-training education.

Janet Smith
Director of Behavior Programs, Capital Area Humane Society, Lansing MI speaking on
What Will Scooby Do? Statistics and Behavioral Assessment

Janet Smith will share data and statistics on behavior evaluations conducted at the Capital Area Humane Society in Lansing, Michigan. She will discuss how behavior evaluations can impact decision making, enhance the success of adoptions and reduce returns, and help you with planning.

Insurance for Rescues - Workshop

Many rescuers are working without liability insurance. There are ways to get insurance for you and your rescue. This workshop will explore identifying your insurance needs and what options are available to you.

Darlene Larson

Attitude Adjustment for Successful Adoptions

What criteria do we use to place our animals into good homes? Is it working? How do we know? What components result in a successful adoption? We'll look at some recent studies and innovative programs and explore new approaches that can help us in our quest to successfully match people and their new pets.

The cost of the daylong event is $75 ($55 for Alliance members) and includes lunch, snacks, materials, and lots of chances for networking. Table display spaces available for vendors and nonprofits, too.
